. American Rose Society .

The American Rose Society was established in 1892 and is an educational, nonprofit organization dedicated exclusively to the cultivation and enjoyment of roses. The American Rose Society is a national organization with over 11,000 members dedicated to the enjoyment, enhancement and promotion of America's Floral Emblem. Almost 400 local chapters and affiliates throughout the country offer rose-related activities and information.

The mission of the American Rose Society is to increase the general interest in the cultivation of the rose for all people and to improve its standard of excellence. The objectives of the American Rose Society are to encourage amateur and professional rose culture; to increase the general understanding of and interest in all aspects of roses, including but not limited to the history of roses, hybridization, growing, exhibiting, designing rose arrangements, judging, research, photography of roses, and thereby to improve the standard of excellence of the rose for all people; to record, publish and establish priority on rose cultivar names as the International Registrar for Roses, and to publish rose cultivar ratings in the Handbook for Selecting Roses from cross-country surveys collected in the Roses in Review database.

Most ARS members are home gardeners like you who enjoy growing roses and want to expand their knowledge of rose culture. Many members also enjoy the thrill of exhibiting their roses in competition with other rose-lovers or participating in photography contests, rose-themed quilt contests and other rose-related activities. The American Rose Society has developed standards and guidelines for guiding these competitions. We also publish a schedule of the various workshops, seminars, garden events and rose shows occurring in our country. The Society publishes a bi-monthly magazine, American Rose, available to all members.

The Society has its headquarters located on the grounds of the beautiful American Rose Center near Shreveport, Louisiana. The Center is home to a lovely Garden of over 20,000 rose bushes comprising nearly 400 varieties of modern and old roses. When you visit Shreveport, be sure to check the Events Schedule so you can attend one of our many Garden Events.

ARS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization governed by a Board of Directors and operated by the staff at the Rose Center under the direction of our Executive Director and an Executive Committee.

Would you be interested in joining?  We offer educational programs designed to benefit all rose growers.  Members of the American Rose Society can study to become Consulting Rosarians, Horticulture and Arrangement Judges, and enjoy  various social activities at the American Rose Center and our National Conventions and Conferences.  Members also receive the Handbook for Selecting Roses each year as well as the American Rose Annual, and five full-color magazines as well as reciprocal entry privileges to noted botanical gardens, herbariums, rose parks and gardens in this country and abroad.  There is also opportunity to exercise your management skills by volunteering for office or serving on a National Committee.

Best of all, we have fun and enjoy this hobby.
